Topics/themes for 2024:
Spring Issue (V4 I1): Instant
INSTANT is our theme for Spring, 2024: like an eye seeing a scene at one moment, like something thta happens so fast. In your cover letter write one sentence to explain how your work(s) relate to “Instant.”
The genres wanted are flash fiction, creative nonfiction, and memoir (one work up to 500 words); poetry (maximum 2, up to 500 words), art (maximum 2, format: jpg, png, gif), and video (maximum 2, length up to 3 minutes and 30 seconds, format: mp3, give a link with file security that allows any viewer). You may only submit in one genre.
This call closes on MARCH 15, 2024, and publishes on April 15, 2024.
Fall Issue (V4 I2): Devil’s Party
Just in time for the moody season of fall, DEVIL’S PARTY is our theme. Of course poet John Milton was said to be a member of the devil’s party (meant like political party), so think about a devilish party of any kind, or the devil is in the details, devil’s food cake, the devil take you, etc. Use your creativity and take our friend the devil out to play. NOPE, we are not looking for religious admonitions against the devil. Serious pieces are okay; religious rants or attempts at conversion are not, nor are we looking for devil worship (we respectfully leave that to the band Black Sabbath). We’re not viewing the devil in the biblical sense here; we’re thinking of it as a signifier, as, for example, devil’s food cake is named that way to indicate the cake is very tempting. However if you write a short piece that includes the devil as a character in some way (horror, humor), that works, as long as it is not a religious lesson.
Submissions close JUNE 30, 2024 and the issue publishes September 1, 20241.
Holiday Issue (V4 I3): Holiday Noods
HOLIDAY NOODS is our 2024 winter holiday theme. Give us your best holiday fails (any December holiday, from Hannukah, to Solstice, to NYE, etc.) or your best funny work about noodles that happens to ALSO be holiday-themed in some way.
The point of the end-of-year issue is always to be light-hearted to downright silly.
